Patents

Patents protect new and useful processes, machines, articles of manufacture, compositions of matter or any new and useful improvement on any of the foregoing.  A patent gives an inventor the ability to prevent others from making, using offering for sale, or selling the invention in the U.S. and also allows the inventor to prevent the invention from being imported  into the U.S.

Copyrights

Copyrights protect original works of authorship, which may include literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works.  A copyright gives the author the exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, publicly perform, publicly display the copyrighted work and also to prepare derivative works based upon it.

Trademarks

Trademarks/service marks are words, phrases, symbols, or designs that identify the source of the goods/services and help consumers to distinguish the source of the goods/services from those of others.  A federally registered mark gives the owner the exclusive right to use the mark in connection with the goods/services identified in the federal registration.

Trade Secrets

Trade secrets refer to any confidential business information that provides the business with an economic advantage over competitors who do not know about the information or use it.  A trade secret protects the owner from unauthorized disclosure of the information.
